Ali AVCU (Prof. Dr.) received his Bachelor's (1999) and Master's (2002) degrees from Ondokuz Mayıs University, and his PhD (2009) from Ankara University. He worked as a faculty member at the Faculties of Theology at Ondokuz Mayıs University between 1999 and 2002, and at Cumhuriyet University between 2002 and 2018. Pursuant to Article 35 of the Higher Education Law (YÖK), he was assigned to Ankara University from 2003 to 2010. In August 2018, he began working at the Department of History of Islamic Sects at the Faculty of Theology, Ankara Social Sciences University. Avcu has published books, articles, papers, and translations on topics such as Islamic Sects, Imamiyya, Batinism, Ismailism, Qarmatianism, Religion-Culture Relations, the relationship between Batinism and Terrorism, and the relationship between Sufism and Batinism.

He conducts research on Batinism and Ismailism.

He is one of the few scholars who has deeply considered the relationship between Batinism and terrorism, as well as Mahdism and terrorism.

He also investigates the influence of pre-Islamic religious and philosophical movements on Islamic thought.

He has plans to conduct original research that explores the relationship between Batinism and Sufism, and between Batinism and Alevism.

He works to develop unique approaches on topics such as the religion-sect relationship and the relationship between religion and interpretation.
